Robin Wilding trained at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, qualifying in 1969. He went back to university to complete a three year masters course in Prosthodontics (the dentistry concerned with replacing missing teeth). He was strongly influenced at Wits by Professor Frikkie van Reenen, a skilled prosthodontist, microbiologist, artist and accomplished musician.
Robin spent the spent the next 10 years in private practice confined to Prosthetic dentistry. He decided to do all the necessary laboratory work involved following the example and encouragement of the American prosthodontist Howard E. Payne. He has since then always done his own laboratory work
Robin began teaching at the University of the Western Cape and was subsequently appointed to the staff as Professor of Prosthetic Dentistry. He became interested in curriculum development and in particular a shift in emphasis from medical to dental basic sciences. He set up and later chaired, a department of Oral Biology under the inspiration and advice of Prof Jeff Osborn from the University of Alberta. He was awarded a PhD for published work on studies of jaw movement related to chewing efficiency, working with Prof Arthur Lewin the inventor of the Sirognathograph.
Robin returned to the UK in 1998 and set up a practice confined to Dental Prosthetics. He developed clinical capacity in implant placement and is an active member of the Association of Dental Implantolgy UK. He pursued a long interest in chaos and complex systems by enrolling in a masters course in Holistic Science at Dartington College in Devon. His mentor was Prof Brian Goodwin and he was also strongly influenced by James Lovelock
Robin was invited by Alasdair Miller the Postgraduate Dean of the South West,
to take over the organisation of the BUOLD Prosthetic Course. His interest in self
directed learning through case study has lead to progressive changes in the approach
to teaching this course. Robin was asked by Prof John Bligh of the Peninsular Medical
School to assist in the drafting of a case-
